Chapter 23: Cleared

Carys's POV

Six weeks after the Gathering, Hattie finished her exam, stripped off her gloves and said, "Cleared."

"For everything?"

"For everything. And I'm taking the baby tonight, so don't argue."

"I wasn't going to."

"You were thinking it," she said, and went off down the hall with my daughter on her shoulder, singing something tuneless.

Cade was waiting in our bedroom at the Hall.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed with his boots off, in a clean shirt.

He had put on weight in six weeks, and the scar through his eyebrow looked paler in the lamp.

He stood up the moment I came in.

"Hattie says yes," I told him.

He let out a long, slow breath.

"I'll go slow."

"If you go slow I'll hurt you."

He grinned, quick and startled, and it was the first time I had seen his face do that since before the spring.

I crossed the room and put my hands flat on his chest.

His heart beat under my palm, steady and warm, and the bond in my own chest answered it.

I could feel him.

I had forgotten that this was part of it.

Under my fingers his want was a bright, rising thing, and I felt my own answer it before I'd drawn breath.

"You feel that," he said, low.

"I feel everything you do."

"Then you know how long I've been waiting."

"Six weeks," I said. "Poor baby."

He kissed me.

It was not slow.

His hands went into my hair and down my back, and I pulled his shirt over his head and ran my mouth down the clean, warm skin where the grey had been.
