Five Firemen Carried Me Out, and Not One Will Put Me Down novel · Chapter 12 of 24
Chapter 12: 3:12 a.m.
The doctor cleared my throat on Thursday, and by Saturday night my voice had come back low and clear.
I had spent two days whispering in the schoolhouse, telling them the doctor said to rest it.
Nobody had questioned that.
At eleven the five of them were asleep in the bunk room on the other side of one thin board, and Emile came to the teacher's room with a candle and a paperback.
"I can't do anything in a hurry," he said.
"I need you to know that going in."
"I know," I said.
He put the candle on the shelf and the book on the floor.
He took his glasses off, folded them, and laid them on top of the book, and then he turned and looked at me with eyes that were bare and very dark.
"Everybody else has had you," he said.
"Against walls, in cabs, in the steam.
"I want to take the whole night," he said.
"All right," I said.
"And we have to be quiet."
"Why?" I said.
He tilted his head at the wall.
"Four men and a board."
My face went hot, and he smiled for the first time.
He knelt at the foot of the cot.
He took my left foot in both hands, as he had in the first hour, and kissed the arch.
I shivered.
He kissed the ankle, and then the inside of the knee, and each kiss was slow and exact and deliberate.
"I'm going to learn you," he said, very low.
"I want to know where every part of you answers."
He undressed me with his fingertips.
He lifted Normand's shirt over my head and laid it on the floor, then drew his palms up my sides and around my ribs.
