Chapter 8: Corin's Price
Dahlia was carried out of the ballroom in Ronan's arms, murmuring that she must have slipped.
Nobody believed her, and for the first time in two lifetimes I watched a room decide not to.
I walked out onto the terrace for air.
Corin was waiting there by the stone rail, a folded paper in his hand.
He had taken off his green waistcoat and rolled up his sleeves, ready to bargain.
"Miss Westermark," he said. "A word about the mill."
"You have two."
"I'll buy it back." He held out the paper. "Fifteen thousand moon-coins, cash, today. That's more than it's worth."
I read the paper by the lantern.
It was a good offer, tidy and exact.
"No," I said.
"Twenty."
"The mill is worth nine to me and thirty to you," I said. "You want it because the capital's bread runs through it, and whoever owns it owns the price. You'll pay me thirty."
His mouth twitched. "That's double my offer."
"Double your offer. Plus one more thing."
"I knew there'd be a thing."
"At dawn you'll stand in the square under the clock," I said, "and you'll read a statement aloud. That the Fitzalan pack set the price of flour too high for two years because the pack wanted it. That the fire at the mill was set by Fitzalan men. And that Althea Westermark had nothing to do with either."
Corin stared at me.
"You want me to humiliate us in front of the whole capital."
"I want you to tell the truth in front of the whole capital," I said. "It's cheaper than thirty thousand."
