Chapter 22: One Cup

I read Zelda's post in the break room with a sandwich I didn't eat.

It was long, and it didn't flatter her.

She said she had filmed a box and called it a family.

She said she'd known her best friend was left out and posted it anyway, because the group was bigger than the truth and she liked being inside it.

She said Lacey had told her one lie in October and she had repeated it for ten weeks.

At the bottom she wrote my name, and then wrote: You were never the difficult one. I was.

By lunch it had four hundred shares.

By two, my clinic manager had called me into the office, and she had Zelda's second message on her screen.

It was a note to the clinic, signed with her full name, saying Lacey's post about me was false and she had proof.

"Your friend wrote me an email," my manager said. "A long one. She sent the whole chat."

"She did?"

"I took the post down myself. Take what you need today."

I told her thank you.

I went back to the treatment room, where a beagle with a cone on his head stared at me with deep sorrow, and I put my hand on his ribs and breathed for a minute.

Zelda texted at five.

Can I see you? I'll understand if no.

I stared at it.

I typed: Coffee. The place on Lyndale. Tomorrow at ten. One hour.

She wrote back one thing: Thank you.
