Chapter 10: The Armchair

Wendy's POV

"You knew," I said again.

Adam stood in the road with his hands open at his sides.

"Yes."

"You knew who Evan was when I walked up to the desk."

"I knew his name. I knew where he worked. I knew by the time you asked for your rooms."

"And you let me call you staff."

"I did."

I came down the last step.

The cold concrete bit at my bare feet, and I barely felt it.

"I stood in a lobby and told four people I'd take everything back," I said. "And the whole time the man who owns Evan's job was standing behind me, holding my bag."

"I should have said it."

"Why didn't you?"

His face stayed steady.

I thought he would give me some smooth answer.

"Because you were shaking," he said. "Because if I told you I could ruin him with one phone call, you would have felt you had to decide. You'd had eleven hours of everyone needing something from you. I didn't want to be one more."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the true one."

"Then here's mine." My voice cracked. "I let you kneel in front of me, and you were lying."

"I never lied."

"You let me believe it!"

"Yes."

He took one step toward me.

"I let you believe it for three days. That's what I did wrong. Tell me what it costs."

I looked at him in the porch light.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to turn around, go inside and bolt the door.

I wanted to pull him up the steps by his shirt.

It was all one feeling.

"Inside," I said.

I climbed the porch.

He followed me through the door and up the stairs, and I didn't look back at him once.

My condo was dark and half empty.

Evan's things were gone from the closet.
