Chapter 24: Five Passes
Colin was sitting on a lobby bench with a gym bag between his feet.
He had driven all night, and it showed in his face.
The same night manager who had called me Ms. Carrow on my first night was watching him from the desk.
"Wendy," Colin said, and stood up.
I stopped ten feet away.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said. "I got a job at the hardware store. I made my first hundred dollars today. It's in here."
He held out an envelope, and I didn't take it.
"I wanted to say it without anyone making me. I'm sorry I ruffled your hair."
"That's what you came to say?"
"It's the one I remember." His mouth shook. "I stood next to you while they laughed, and I laughed too. I knew. I'd known for a year. I told myself you were fine because you never said you weren't."
"I never said it because you never asked."
"I know."
I looked at my brother, at the cap he wasn't wearing and the hands he didn't know where to put.
"Mail the hundred on the first," I said. "Like Rohan does. It isn't a favor."
"Okay."
"I'm glad you said it."
His face broke open with hope.
"Can I come tomorrow?" he asked. "For the park?"
"No."
"Wen."
"You can come to Mom and Dad's on Sunday if they ask you. You can come to my table when I invite you." I kept my voice level. "It won't be soon. Go home, Colin."
He picked up the gym bag.
He stood a moment longer, and then he walked out through the glass doors without arguing.
