Chapter 6: The Ring

"Don't open it," I whispered.

Adam had his hand flat on the door, and he looked at me over his shoulder.

"Do you want me to send him away?"

I thought about it.

I thought about the lobby, the steak dinner, and the word "dramatic."

"No," I said. "Open it. I want him to see."

I pulled the robe off the chair and tied it tight.

Then I stood up, and my heels barely hurt.

Adam opened the door and stepped aside.

Evan stood in the hall with two paper cups in a cardboard tray.

His hair was combed and his polo was fresh.

He was smiling already.

Then he saw Adam in his unbuttoned shirt, and behind him, me in a robe, with my hair wild.

His smile slid off his face.

"What the hell," he said.

"Good morning, Evan."

"Wendy, you slept with the staff?"

"I slept," I said. "He did a little more than that."

A man in a golf shirt stopped halfway to the elevator.

Evan swallowed and found his voice.

"Okay. Fine. We'll talk about that later."

He set the coffee tray on the floor.

Then he reached into his pocket, and his whole face changed to the one he used on clients.

He dropped to one knee.

"Wendy Carrow," he said, loudly. "I have been a fool."

The man in the golf shirt lifted his phone.

So did the housekeeper.

"I know I took you for granted. I know I let things get out of hand. But the idea of losing you showed me what I really want."

He flipped open a small black velvet box.
