Chapter 4: The Bank

I called Lorna at seven in the morning from Margo's couch.

She answered on the second ring, already awake, already cheerful.

"Caleb. I hoped it would be you."

"I read the contract."

"And?"

"I accept the boy."

I heard her set down a cup.

"I knew you were a sensible man."

"I have one condition."

"Name it."

"Sunday dinner at your house. Every relative, the whole group chat. Dexter and Jasper sit at the table with us."

She was quiet a moment.

"Why would you want an audience?"

"Because I've been the only one in the family who didn't know," I said. "I want everyone to see me say it."

She laughed, pleased.

"Good boy. Then we'll make it a celebration."

The line clicked.

Margo stood in the kitchen doorway in a gray T-shirt, holding a skillet.

"You said yes."

"I said dinner."

"She'll have you sign by dessert."

"She can try."

I got up and folded the blanket she had given me.

"I'm not staying with them, Margo. I want every one of them at that table when I stop pretending."

"And what do you need from me?"

"Help me until the baby comes."

I made it plain.

"Photos, dates, the letter. I'll pay for your time. After my daughter is born, we're done."

"I don't want your money."
