Chapter 22: Poppy's Table
Stevie's POV
"You don't get to decide this for me either," I said again, because he was still standing in the doorway with his mouth half open.
"I didn't decide anything. I gave you the choice."
"You gave me a house and a speech and a cot."
"I..."
"You decided I'd rather have a house than a husband."
"Stevie..."
"You decided I should have to ask for you in daylight, on paper."
He shut his mouth.
Behind me Poppy knocked on the car window with her rabbit.
"Daddy! We're getting pancakes!"
"In a minute, baby!" I called, and turned back.
The crew had gathered at a tactful distance by the sail loft.
Not one of them was looking at us.
All of them were listening.
I unfolded the deed and held it up between us.
"I'm keeping this," I said.
His shoulders came down.
"I'm keeping it because nobody paid for it."
"Good."
"I'd rather own the floor I stand on than have somebody hand it to me."
"I'm not done."
"Go on."
"I want you in it, Sawyer."
He didn't breathe.
"On my terms. Which are new. There are three."
"I'm listening."
"One. You say the thing before you do the thing. Out loud, to me, with words. No more deciding what I can bear."
"Yes."
"Two. Nobody sleeps on a cot. If we fight, we fight in the kitchen, and one of us makes coffee at the end of it."
"Yes."
"Three." My voice wobbled, and I let it. "Sundays are still ours. On the porch, in daylight. Because that's where it started, and I want to remember how far we came."
His eyes had gone bright.
"Who's the porch for?" he said.
"Both of us."
