Chapter 21: Leonard's POV: The Statement

Leonard's POV

They took Imogen out through the side door of the hall with two Irish police officers and the detective at her elbow.

She did not look back.

Her cane had been left lying on the stage, and I picked it up and held it, and could not think what to do with it.

Leah stood at the foot of the steps with Fiona's arm around her.

Her eyes met mine across the room, and she shook her head once, slightly.

Not yet.

I stayed where I was.

At eleven that night, in the back kitchen of the hall, with a mug of Fiona's tea going cold beside my elbow, I gave the detective my statement.

It took two hours.

I said it all in the order it happened, with no adjectives.

I said that I had handed over the keys.

I said that I had seen the boy before she did.

I said I had knelt by him in the road and heard him say his fiddle was in the grass.

At the payphone the detective stopped writing and waited.

I gave her the part about the receiver last, and I did not soften it.

I said I had got back in the car.

"You understand," the detective said, when I'd finished, "that this is a confession."

"Yes."

"Failure to render aid. Leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality. Accessory after the fact. In Massachusetts, with a good lawyer, and a witness of the quality of your wife, you'd likely see six months to a year. Possibly more."
