Chapter 13: The Council
Winifred's cane stayed pointed at Jarrett's heart.
Nobody in the hall breathed.
"Call it," she said. "Now, while the pack is here to see it."
The council was already in the room.
Seven of them sat on the side bench under the windows, old wolves in good wool.
I had written every one of their oaths into the pack book myself.
A thin man with white hair stood up from the middle of the bench.
He was the council chair, and he looked like a man who wanted to be anywhere else.
"A charge against the Alpha needs the Elder's voice and five of seven votes," he said.
"I bring the charge," Winifred said. "He has defied pack law and named a rogue."
"Then the council hears the charge, and the Alpha's answer."
"There is nothing to answer. He said it himself, to all of you."
Jarrett stood very still beside me.
"I'll answer to the council," he said. "Not to a cane."
Heads turned along the benches.
I stepped off the dais and onto the floor.
