The alpha house was dark when we reached it, and the porch light was on.

It was always on.

Jarrett stopped at the door with his hand on the knob.

"You don't have to come in," he said.

"I know."

"Nobody's told you it's yours."

"Nobody has to."

I walked past him into the big front room.

The stone fireplace was cold, and the wall of Colefield photographs was gray in the dark.

Grandfathers in hats, a bride in lace, Jarrett at ten with a fishing rod.

Not one face in a hundred frames was mine.

I put my hand in my jacket pocket and found the thing I'd carried there for six days.

Four brass tacks, warm from my body.

I set them on the mantel in a row, point down.

"What are those?" he said.

"The ones from the notice."

"You kept them."

"I didn't know why. I know now."

"Then I'll keep them where I can find them," he said.

He laid his palm over them and closed his eyes.

Then he turned around, and his face was different.

It was open, and hungry, and not afraid of me at all.

"I can't wait any longer," he said.
