On Monday at noon two clay bowls sat on the head table, one white and one black.
Every wolf over eighteen got a stone at the door, a smooth gray pebble from the shallows.
You dropped it in the white bowl for yes and the black bowl for no.
I stood alone in the middle of the floor, because that was the rule for the wolf being voted on.
Jarrett sat at the head table with his hands flat on the wood, not looking at me, because that was the rule for her mate.
It was the loneliest I had ever felt, and I was surrounded.
The chair rapped the table once.
"The sponsor will speak."
Calla's father rose from the ordinary benches.
He wore the gray suit again, but he had left off the council pin.
He walked to the center of the floor and stood a few feet from me.
He did not look at me for a long time.
"I have known this girl since she was fourteen," he said.
