Chapter 18: The Round
On Sunday at noon I climbed the ladder to the roof of the tire shop.
I had a ball of kite string, a protractor and a pill bottle.
I had been putting this off for twenty-two days.
I am a statistician by temperament, and the only honest way to be wrong about an angle is to measure it.
The roof was flat tar and gravel, twenty-two feet up, with a low wall along the front.
Behind the wall was a flattened place where a man had knelt, and a beer can that nobody had thrown away.
It was Yosi's perch, and his sponsor's phone mount was still bolted to the edge, aimed at the bakery.
I tied the string to the mount and let out the ball until it touched the plywood top of the domino table.
The table stood sixty feet from the foot of the wall.
The hole where I had dug out the slug ran at a slant through the plywood.
I laid the protractor against the string and read twenty-one degrees, downward, from the east.
I did the tangent of twenty-two over sixty on the back of my hand.
Twenty degrees, near enough.
The retiree on the lawn chair, the other direction of fire, would have come in flat.
I stood there with the string in my fist and the gravel moving under my shoes.
I had known on October 25, at the wake, with the slug in my hand and the holster bin by the door.
A man who does not want to be right can wait a very long time.
I had waited until Saturday, when I watched a tape of my cousin shoving a man toward a lane to get a shot on camera.
