Chapter 12: Try Sleeping in Your Truck
"Sit down," Abel said. "You're shaking."
"I'm not shaking."
"Your hands are."
I looked at them.
He was right.
I sat on the edge of the mattress, and he crossed the room and crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell rain on his jacket and wood glue and cold air.
He didn't touch me.
"You did that well," he said.
"I was terrified."
"You didn't look it."
"I've had practice," I said. "Ten years of looking calm while a man explained my feelings to me."
The corner of his mouth moved.
It was almost a smile, and then it went away.
"What I said on the dock still stands," I told him. "I haven't forgiven you."
"I know."
"I don't know if I will."
"I know that too."
"Then why are you in my apartment at eleven at night with water running into my floor?"
"Because I'm sorry," Abel said. "And because I can't stay away from you, and I've tried for six years."
The room went completely quiet.
I heard the oven downstairs tick and settle.
"Six years," I said.
"Longer," he said. "But I was trying to be a decent man about it. You were married to my friend."
"You were never decent about me. You stood in a parking lot and watched me cry."
"I know."
"Stop saying you know."
"Then tell me what you want me to say."
I looked at his face.
I had known that face for twelve years, across a picnic table and a backyard grill.
I had never once really looked at it.
