Chapter 13: The Real Date

Bethany had picked a pancake place on the east side, where nobody from the company ate.

I got there first and took the back booth, facing the door.

My mother had made me text her the cross streets and promise to call from the parking lot.

I had not told Abel.

I also checked the window twice for his truck, and it was not there, which annoyed me more than it should have.

Bethany came in at nine in a grey sweatshirt and jeans, with her hair in a rubber band and no makeup.

She looked twenty, and she looked scared.

She slid into the booth and put both hands flat on the table.

"You came," she said.

"You said alone."

"I know what I said."

The waitress poured coffee and went away.

Bethany didn't touch hers.

"I did the math on the stairs," she said. "After you told me about the letter. I've done it every night since."

"And?"

"The doctor gave me my due date at the first scan. It's the middle of April."

"I know. Dad put it in the family chat."

"Count back, Phoebe."

I did the math.

I got to a weekend in late July, and I looked up at her.

"I told Graeme I ended it with my ex in May," Bethany said. "That's what he thinks. That's what I swore to him."

"And you didn't."

"I saw my ex until the last weekend of July. Then I stopped, because I was ashamed, and because Graeme kept saying he'd leave you." She pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes. "I got pregnant that last weekend. I'm almost sure. Graeme and I were together twice that month, and I thought, it's either, and I told myself it was his."
