Chapter 18: Ink Blue

Bethany's phone went to voicemail every time I called that Wednesday, and I called Abel after each try.

He drove past the guesthouse twice and saw Graeme's car in the drive and the curtains shut.

Then an invitation came to my work email, because I was still the controller.

Graeme was hosting a customer dinner at the flagship showroom on Thursday night, a warm-up for Saturday's gala, and I knew Bethany would be on his arm.

Sixty guests were coming, the contractors and designers and builders who bought our cabinets by the truckload.

He had put my name on the list himself.

"He wants you there to look fine," my mother said, zipping me into the dress.

"Then I'll look fine."

I had bought it that afternoon with my own card, in a shop on High Street, a deep ink blue with long sleeves and a high back.

It was not satin.

It was nothing like any dress a man had ever picked for me.

My mother stepped back and put her hand over her mouth.

"You look like you own something," she said.

"I do. A loan note and a very good lawyer."

"Go."

Abel met me at the showroom door in a dark jacket I had never seen on him.

He looked at me longer than a coworker should.

"Don't," I said. "I'll cry on the carpet."

"I didn't say anything."

"Your face did."

He offered his arm, and I took it.

Inside, the display kitchens were lit bright, and waiters in white jackets moved between them with trays of crab cakes.

I heard the room notice me before I saw it.

Conversations dipped and picked up again in a different key.

An old builder with white eyebrows came across the floor with both hands out.
