Chapter 20: Ring on the Stage

The Maxwell ballroom had gold chairs, a stage, and a screen the size of a garage door.

Graeme had spent more on it than he had spent on my last three birthdays together.

I stood in the lobby at six o'clock in the ink blue dress, with Abel on my left and my mother on my right.

Bethany's envelope was in my clutch, still sealed.

A man in a black suit stepped in front of the ballroom doors.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Colter," he said. "Mr. Colter has asked that you not be admitted."

"On whose authority?"

"The host's."

"Who is the host?" Abel asked.

The man looked at the list on his tablet.

"Colter Kitchen and Bath."

"I own forty percent of Colter Kitchen and Bath," Abel said. "I signed the hotel contract as an officer, and I put my initials on page three. I have my copy here."

He took a folded paper out of his jacket.

The man read it for a long time.

He went to find the banquet manager.

The banquet manager was a tired woman in a headset, who read it twice and looked at the three of us.

"There are twenty seats at table one reserved for the other officer," she said. "He can bring whom he likes."

"Thank you," Abel said.

"Please don't make me regret it."

"We're only here to eat," my mother said, with great dignity.

The doors opened.

The room was already half full, with two hundred chairs set in rounds and servers circulating with champagne.
