Chapter 22: Forty Percent

Abel's POV

Graeme came to the flagship at seven on Monday morning with a new lawyer and a folder.

I was already there, sitting on the edge of the marble island with a coffee.

Phoebe stood beside me in her navy suit, and forty staff members were arranged in folding chairs between the display kitchens.

I had told them to come in early.

They had all seen the videos, and nobody asked why.

Graeme walked down the center aisle in the tuxedo from Saturday, with his tie undone and a shadow on his jaw.

He had not slept.

The lawyer beside him was a narrow man in a grey overcoat, who carried a leather case and kept his eyes on the carpet.

"Abel," Graeme said. "I've called a special meeting of the shareholders. You were given forty-eight hours' notice."

"I was."

"Then you know why we're here."

"Tell me anyway."

He opened the folder.

"Under section nine of the owners' agreement, an officer who commits a breach of confidence may be removed for cause by the majority holder. You gave a medical record to a third party. You trespassed on company property, with a crowbar."

"Bolt cutters."

"You supported a smear campaign against the company, in public, in front of a client base worth millions." His voice rose. "I am removing you as officer and director, effective this morning, and I am exercising my right to purchase your forty percent at book value."

He slid a paper across the island.

The number on it was a quarter of what the shares were worth.

A woman from accounts payable gasped.

I picked up the paper and read it all the way through.

"Section nine," I said.
