Chapter 4: What I Signed

On Monday morning I went to work, because I had not been fired and nobody had told me to stay home.

The flagship showroom opened at nine, and the all-staff meeting started at eight-thirty.

Graeme had sent the invitation on Saturday while I was at my mother's.

Subject line: Important family and company news.

I walked into the back of the showroom in a navy suit and my hair pinned up, with my mother's old laptop under my arm.

Forty people sat in folding chairs between the display kitchens.

The sales team, the installers in their clean polos, the two women from accounts payable who had worked beside me for years.

Every head turned when I came in.

They had all seen the videos.

A man in the third row looked at the floor.

Graeme stood at the front beside the marble island, in the blue shirt I had ironed for him a hundred times.

Bethany sat in the first chair with her hands folded over her stomach, in a plain black dress, her hair down.

She had a staff lanyard around her neck.

It said FINANCE.

"Phoebe," Graeme said warmly. "Thanks for joining us. Grab a seat."

"I'll stand."

He gave the room a small apologetic smile.

"As most of you know, this has been a hard weekend for our family. Phoebe and I are going through a transition. She's going to take some time for her health."

"My health is fine," I said.

A few people shifted in their chairs.

"In the meantime," he went on, "Bethany has agreed to step in and take over the finance desk. She's been learning the systems since spring, and she's family, so we can trust her. I'd ask everyone to give her the same support you gave Phoebe."
