Chapter 5: The Lobby
My phone started buzzing before I reached the revolving door.
Likes. Comments. A text from a number I didn't know. Then three more.
I had not even put it in my pocket when the ballroom doors banged open behind me.
"Lee!"
Travis crossed the lobby fast, still wearing the smile he used for cameras.
It slipped as he got closer.
"Take it down."
"No."
"Take it down now. You don't know what you've done."
"I know exactly what I've done. I told the truth."
A few guests drifted out of the ballroom behind him. A man from Lakeshore Bank, the Stags' biggest sponsor, stopped near the coat check with a drink in his hand.
Travis saw him and lowered his voice.
"Lena, you are upset, and I understand that. But this is not the time or place."
"You picked the time and the place. It was our anniversary."
"Give me the phone."
He reached for it.
I stepped back, but his fingers closed on my wrist.
"Let go."
"Give me the phone, Lee."
"I said let go."
A hand came down on Travis's forearm from the side.
It was a big, calm hand, and it did not squeeze. It simply stayed there, and Travis could not move.
"Hands to yourself, Cap," Nate Corrigan said.
Travis stared at it.
"Stay out of this, Nate."
"With a bank executive standing right there?" Nate nodded toward the coat check. "I don't think so."
Travis looked over his shoulder.
The man from Lakeshore Bank was watching with his drink halfway to his mouth. Behind him, two wives had stopped talking.
