Chapter 11: Her Voice in His Mouth

Ida answered it.

She came down the dock at nine with her phone held out, the business news playing on it.

"Stoddard Maritime stock fell eleven percent this week," a man in a tie was saying. "Investors are asking whether the company's famous luck left the chapel with the bride."

Ida tapped the screen.

"Quarterly call with the big investors. Today at ten. He'll be in that boardroom."

I grabbed the notebook.

My voice used to calm storms.

Jasper read it.

Then he looked at me, and I watched it land.

"He's going to use it on them."

I signed yes.

"Get in the truck," Ida said.

The tower lobby had a new guard who didn't know my face.

He knew Jasper's.

"Mr. Stoddard," he said, standing up. "You're not allowed in the building."

"I know," said Jasper. "Which elevator's the fastest?"

The guard looked at him.

"The one on the left," he said, and sat back down.

Thirtieth floor.

The boardroom had glass walls.

Twelve board members around a long glass table. Two big screens on the wall full of investors' faces in little squares.

A speakerphone in the middle of the table, a black disk the size of a dinner plate.

Corbett at the head of the table, smiling.

My conch in his hand.

He spoke into it.

The voice came out of the black disk.

It was my voice.

Low and warm and slow, the voice I used to sing over storms when I was a girl.

But they were his words.

"I understand your concern. Let me be very clear. Nothing has changed. Stoddard Maritime is the luckiest company on this coast."

Around the table, every face went soft.

On the screens, the investors were nodding.

Jasper opened the glass door.

Corbett saw me.

He kept talking into the conch.
