Chapter 30: The Crown
Jasper was beside me at the rail.
He didn't take my hand.
He kept both of his on the rail, very carefully.
"Go if you want to," he said quietly. "I mean it."
I looked at him.
"You'd let me?"
"You asked me once at an altar. I said yes. I'm not going to make you ask permission to leave."
Below us, forty sea folk waited in the moonlight.
My aunts. My cousins.
The aunt who'd told me I smelled like him.
My mother's coral rooms were down there. Her songs. Every storm on this coast.
I'd wanted all of it once, at sixteen.
Then I thought of Ida's kitchen.
Biscuit in his bow tie. The cake with the A that ran out of room.
The bait shop woman's pies. A plastic mermaid on my belt loop.
Jasper singing the turning-tide song so badly the dog left.
"I'm not coming home tonight," I called down.
The ring murmured.
"This is home now," I said. "But the court needs a queen. One who stayed. One who came after me when everybody else turned away."
I looked at the old cousin.
