Chapter 18: The License
"They're halfway through," I said. "Let me serve dessert."
"No more food leaves this kitchen."
"It's shortcake. It's already plated."
"Ms. Solberg, if one more plate goes out, it's a citation and a fine. Then it's a hearing."
Leif put the tray down very slowly.
The man from Iowa turned off the grill.
On the iPad, Hedy said, "Who is that? Turn me around. I'll talk to her."
I turned Hedy face down on the bar.
I wiped my hands on my apron and walked out onto the porch.
Fifty faces looked up at me in the candlelight.
"The county just closed my kitchen," I said. "Somebody called in a complaint tonight. My license lapsed on June 1, and nobody told me."
A sound went down the tables.
"Everybody will get their money back. I'm sorry. I'll send it tomorrow."
The old man in the plaid sport coat put down his fork.
"I paid for dinner," he said. "I've had dinner. Best walleye I've had since your grandmother's."
"You didn't get dessert."
"I'm eighty-one. I don't need dessert."
