Chapter 24: Christmas Eve

"I wore this every morning for six months, waiting to hear you on the stairs," the note said. "Bring it to the church. I want it back on the way out. G."

I put the watch cap in my purse.

At three-fifty the church was full to the back wall again.

Not with the same people.

The Rose Club was there, in the middle pews, in their good hats.

The bank president. Both commissioners. The young deputy in a suit, with his wife, already crying.

My boss from the café was there, in a tie, looking like it hurt him.

And on the right side of the church, filling four whole pews, were the men from Lower Wacker.

The harmonica man in a brown suit.

The two brothers, not fighting.

The vet, in a navy blazer with a Bears pin on the lapel.

Quinton had flown them down that morning on the white jet, eleven of them, with a lunch of fried chicken somewhere over Missouri.

The Rose Club treasurer kept turning around to look at them.

The vet waved at her.

She waved back.

My mother was in the last pew by the door, alone, in her plain wool coat.

She didn't turn around when the music started.

She just stood up with everybody else.

The retired judge was at the front of the church in his black robe, with Pastor beside him.

He'd asked for the job.

"I've married four hundred couples," he'd said at Thanksgiving. "I'd like to marry one I actually like."

And Quinton was standing at the bottom of the altar steps.

In the thirty-eight-dollar suit.

It had been pressed, and the tie had been pressed, and at his wrists were two small gold cufflinks with a W on each.

He looked like a movie star who'd won the bet.

Nana took my arm at the back of the aisle.

She was in her good blue dress, with a corsage of red roses from her own yard, and her cane in her other hand.

"Ready, baby?" she said.

"No."

"Good. Nobody ever is." She patted my hand. "Walk slow. Make him wait. He's good at it."

We walked slow.

The whole church turned to watch.

I didn't look at any of them.

I looked at Quinton, the whole length of the old red carpet, and he looked at me the way he had from a concrete ledge at twenty to six in the morning, like I was the best part of his day.

At the front, Nana put my hand in his.

She held on a second longer than she had to.

"Son," she said. "She's yours. But I've still got the cane."
