Chapter 19: Friday Morning
Tavish's cars turned in at the gate at ten minutes to five, three black sedans and a van, and every window in them was dark.
I stood at the cafeteria doors in my gray sweater with a cup of coffee going cold in my hand.
Behind me, the cafeteria was already full.
The crew had been coming in since three, by ones and twos through the side door the guard kept leaving unlatched.
By now there were nearly four hundred of them on folding chairs and tabletops and the floor, in work jackets, with thermoses.
Nobody had told them to be quiet.
They were.
"He's early," Dinah said at my shoulder.
"He thinks we're asleep."
"He's about to find out."
Out in the lot, car doors thumped.
A man in a charcoal overcoat got out of the van.
Two young men followed him, one carrying a folding table and one a banker's box of papers.
Tavish himself came last, with his silver hair combed back and a camel coat over his pinstripe.
