Chapter 23: Saturday
The surgeon gave him twenty minutes, a nurse in the back seat, and a lecture I could hear through the wall.
"Twenty," she said. "The light, the car, and home."
"It's a red light," Loyd said. "How long can it take?"
At ten on Saturday morning I pulled the rental to the curb at Kellogg and Rock Road.
The heat was on high and the wipers were going.
It was snowing lightly.
Dinah sat in the back beside the nurse.
Loyd sat beside me with a blanket to his chin and an oxygen line in his nose.
He looked across the four lanes at the stoplight.
"It's smaller," he said.
"Everything is."
"They put a left-turn arrow in."
The light went red.
A line of cars stopped at the crosswalk.
And between the second and third car, in a gray sweatshirt too thin for the weather, stepped a boy with a squeegee.
He was eleven, maybe.
He carried a bucket in one hand and a rag in the other, and his nose was red.
The cuffs of his sweatshirt had been chewed through at the wrist.
He went down the line of cars the way I used to.
