Chapter 12: Sunday Supper
His mother opened the door in her apron and looked at the four men on her porch.
Then she looked at her son.
"Emile Joseph," she said. "You brought the Theriots to my house."
"Maman, I can explain."
"Explain after they wipe their feet."
Gaston wiped his feet.
Thibault, Fabien and Sylvain wiped theirs in a line.
Emile watched the four biggest stars in the South duck under a doorframe built for his grandfather.
The kitchen smelled of roux and onions.
A pot the size of a bucket sat on the stove, and the table had been laid for six.
"You knew," Emile said slowly.
"I made gumbo for six," his mother said, "because a mother knows. Sit."
They sat.
She ladled out bowls with a steady hand, though dialysis had left her small and tired, and her wrists were thin.
She put the first bowl in front of Gaston.
"You paid my bill," she said.
"Yes, ma'am," Gaston said.
"Without asking."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Why?" she said.
Gaston set down his spoon.
"Because your son is the best thing that ever happened to my family," he said. "And I didn't know how else to say it."
