Chapter 16: The Plan
They planned it at the kitchen table, on the back of a gumbo menu.
Emile drew the stage in pencil.
Four stools, a drum riser, the big screen behind the band, and a small x at the left that he tapped with the eraser.
"The fifth stool," he said. "Where it always is."
"Nobody sits there," Gaston said.
"I'm going to."
Fabien put down his coffee.
"On live television," Emile said. "In front of forty thousand people."
"I walk out in the bird mask. I sit on the stool and I take the mask off."
"And?" Thibault said.
"And I sing the first verse, and then I tell them who I am."
"Marais," said Sylvain.
"Marais."
The brothers looked at each other.
"It gives Ledoux nothing to expose," Fabien said slowly. "If the story is that the ghostwriter has been found, nobody is looking at a wolf."
"They'll look at him," Emile said. "He'll be standing right there with his network crew, waiting for his moment. I want him to have it."
"What moment?"
"The one where I play the recording."
Emile slid his phone across the table.
Ledoux's voice came out of it, warm as syrup. *That money was for the steady supply of excellent songs. It was not for you.*
