Chapter 9: The Full Moon
Sylvain smelled the man before anyone saw him.
It was dusk, three days after the rain, and Emile was sitting on the barn steps with a notebook on his knee.
Sylvain had been prowling the yard for an hour.
He stopped dead and lifted his head, nostrils flared.
"Gun oil," he said.
"What?"
"Gun oil, and the man from the bus. Over there, in the oaks."
He pointed.
Emile squinted and saw it, a glint in the branches at the edge of the property.
A lens.
"Go inside," Sylvain said. "Now."
"It's a photographer."
"It's not just a photographer."
A shot cracked across the yard.
Something whined past Emile's head and thudded into the barn door, and he saw a short feathered dart quivering in the wood.
Sylvain moved.
He moved so fast Emile did not see him cross the yard, only the blur of him and the tearing sound of clothes.
When Emile could see again, there was a wolf in the middle of the gravel.
It was the size of a calf, red-brown, with a white blaze on its chest and a ridge of fur standing up along its spine.
Its eyes were gold.
It put itself between Emile and the oaks, and growled.
The sound shook the barn.
