Chapter 16: Release

I held out my hand, and Vernon put the page in it.

The ink had gone brown.

The handwriting was my mother's, rounder than I remembered, and the last line had been pressed hard into the paper.

I give my daughter into the keeping of the Alpha of Highridge until she is of age.

I read it aloud, slowly, so both packs could hear it.

"Pack law says eighteen," the eldest said from the circle's edge.

"I'm twenty-two," I said.

Vernon's jaw worked.

"The oath is not a paper, Devon. It's the stones."

"You kept me for four extra years on a paper that ended at eighteen." I turned the page so he could see his own mistake. "You didn't read your own file."

"I read it every night."

That was worse, and the pack heard it.

"You took a six-year-old into your house the week her mother died," I said, "and you chose her for a leash before she'd finished crying. You used a child."

He opened his mouth.

I took the release out of my back pocket, the one with his blue signature, and I tore it in half where he could see.

"You can keep this too. I don't need it."

Kellan stepped into the ring.

He did not touch me.

"Eldest," he said. "The treaty of Cold Creek. A wolf who lives on the line may declare for either pack, and the Alpha who loses her cannot refuse the declaration."

"Her mother's cabin sits on the line," the eldest said. "Two elders to witness."
