Chapter 4: The Key
By two that afternoon my whole life fit in the back of my Subaru.
Two duffels, a box of nursing textbooks, my mother's blue quilt and a lamp.
The packhouse had never let me keep much, and I had never asked for more.
I was loading the last box at the kitchen loading dock when a shadow stopped on the concrete beside me.
"Dev."
It was Emmett.
He stood a long way off with his hands open at his sides.
He had not changed out of the shirt he'd worn to brunch, and he had not shaved.
"I'm not here to ask you to stay," he said.
"Good."
"I'm here because somebody should tell you what happened, and nobody else is going to."
I set the box down on the bumper.
The old dog had jumped into the front seat as soon as I opened the door, and he sat there with his head out of the window, watching Emmett without blinking.
"Then tell me," I said.
"I saw you."
I waited.
"I came down the front stairs at 4:20," Emmett said. "I was first. You were sitting right there with the dog. You had your hands in your sleeves."
"I was cold."
"I know. I saw it." His voice scraped. "I stopped. I swear to you I stopped, and I opened my mouth to say your name."
"And?"
"And Dane was behind me on the stairs. He said, Leave her, she'll be fine, she's always fine. And I walked on."
A truck backed up to the far end of the dock, and a man began unloading crates of eggs.
Nobody looked at us.
"Why?" I asked.
It was the only question I had.
"Because I wanted to be at the Point more than I wanted to be decent." He said it quickly, to get it out. "That's all it was. There's no better reason. I've been trying to find one since sunrise."
