Chapter 18: Christmas Eve
On the morning of Christmas Eve I stood on my father's porch with my phone and quit my job.
My manager in Atlanta answered on the fourth ring.
"Naomi, your leave ran out in November," she said. "I have been covering you for six weeks."
"I know, and thank you," I said. "I'm not coming back."
"Is it Mobile?"
"It's Mobile," I said.
"Is it a man?"
I looked at the porch light, burning in the daylight, because I had not turned it off since the first night.
"It's complicated," I said.
She laughed, and she told me to send her a Christmas card, and she said she would mail my last check to the yellow house.
I hung up and stood there.
Nothing under my feet gave way.
That night the sanctuary of Greater Bethel was lit with candles and poinsettias, and the choir sang in their gold robes.
The church had been cold to the five of us since October.
Nobody had put us out, and nobody had made us welcome.
We sat together in the third pew, where I had sat at seventeen, and the pews on either side stayed empty.
