Chapter 20: Mardi Gras
On Fat Tuesday the parade came down Dauphin Street with a brass band at the front and half of Mobile in the road.
I stood on the curb in a gold half mask and a green coat, with Isaiah's arm around my shoulders.
He wore a plain black mask that covered nothing and a gray fedora with a purple feather in the band.
Lucius had put the feather there.
"I look like a fool," Isaiah said.
"You look wonderful," I said.
"I look like a fool who is happy."
"That's the same thing."
Abner stood on my other side with a folding chair under one arm and a paper bag of boiled peanuts.
He was as stern as ever, in a mask he said he had not chosen.
Lucius had found a seat on the float of a society he said he had belonged to since 1998.
He rode high over the street in a purple cape and a gold mask with a long nose.
He threw MoonPies at children and beads at everyone else.
"Cher!" he roared when he saw me. "Catch!"
A string of green beads hit me in the face.
I put them on.
He threw Abner a MoonPie, which Abner caught one-handed and studied with deep suspicion.
Then the next band started playing something with a drum line.
Isaiah, who had told me he did not dance, handed me his hat and went out into the street.
He danced in his gray suit in the middle of Dauphin Street, slowly and badly, with his hands in the air.
