Chapter 15: Say Hello to Your Audience
"You can come in," I said to the officers. "He stays on the step."
The doctor in the camel coat opened his mouth.
"He filed the complaint," Hoyt said. "He doesn't get a vote on who walks through my door."
The older officer looked at the doctor, then at me, and made a small decision.
"Two of us, ma'am. That's all we need."
I led them to the back of the shop.
My mother sat at the workbench with a mug of coffee and her coat folded over the stool beside her.
She had put on lipstick.
I had not seen her wear it in nine months.
"Mrs. Fenn?" the officer said. "We've had a report that you're being held against your will and kept from medical care."
"Held by whom?" Ellen asked.
"A family member says your daughter and this gentleman took you from a hospital."
"I walked out of that hospital on my own feet. There is a video of it, with forty witnesses."
She stood up.
She did it slowly, and without touching the bench, and the younger officer's eyebrows went up.
"Do you know where you are today, ma'am?"
"Fourth Street, in Columbus, over a camera shop. It is Friday. My daughter's wedding was a week ago tomorrow. My husband is Harlan Stroud, and he has been drugging me."
Nobody in the room moved.
"Mrs. Fenn," the older officer said carefully, "that's a serious thing to say."
"I know. I'm going to say it to his doctor's face."
She walked to the front of the shop on her own, and she pushed the door wide.
The doctor stood on the sidewalk with his hands in his coat pockets.
"Good morning," Ellen said. "You prescribed me ten milligrams of a sedative at night when my chart says five. You've kept me in that bed for nine months. You wrote in my record that I'm a danger to myself, and I have never harmed a living soul."
