Four Men Crept Into My Childhood Room, So I Kept My Eyes Shut novel · Chapter 17 of 24

Chapter 17: The Walk-Through

I was down the stairs in Lyle's shirt and my cutoffs before anyone else was up.

The crew had already started.

Two men in orange hats were driving red-flagged stakes into my father's front pasture, and a third was pacing off the fence line with a measuring wheel.

Brock stood in the middle of the yard with a tablet, pointing.

"Brock," I said from the porch steps. "You're on my land."

"Our land," he said pleasantly. "As of Friday, it's going to be somebody's very nice subdivision. This gentleman is the buyer's agent. He just wants a walk-through."

The man in the golf vest nodded at me with a polite, puzzled smile.

I understood in that moment that nobody had told him a word of the truth.

Boots hit the boards behind me.

Clint, Abel, Eli and Lyle came out onto the porch one after another, in whatever they had pulled on, and ranged themselves at my back.

Lyle still had a ribbon bruise on his left wrist, and he did not bother to hide it.

"Morning," Abel said.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

The man in the golf vest took a step back.

"Sir," I said, "I'm Bethany Kilbourn. My father left this farm in five equal shares. Mine is one of them. These four own the others. Nothing here is for sale unless all five of us sign."

"Brock told me it was done," said the agent. "He showed me your signature."

"Did he show you where I signed it?"

The agent turned slowly to look at Brock.

"The paperwork's a formality," Brock said. "She's emotional. She's been living with these men, and they've got her turned around. You can see what's going on here."
