Chapter 2: Open

Hands spread her knees in the dark and Clint's mouth makes her come in silence; in the hall she hears Abel say she is not leaving this time.

The hands did not stop at my knees.

They pushed my legs apart until the sheet slid off and the cool air of the room found me.

I kept my eyes shut and my breathing in fours.

In for four, out for four.

"Look at her," Lyle whispered, so close to the foot of the bed that I felt it on my skin. "She's already wet."

"Shut up," Clint said.

His voice was rough, and I knew it by the way it dropped on the last word.

"I'm only saying what I see."

"Then say it quieter."

A thumb touched the inside of my thigh and slid up, slow, until it found the damp edge of me.

Somebody breathed in hard.

I almost moved.

I almost opened my eyes and said their names, all four of them, in the voice I had used when I was seventeen and they were stealing my pie.

But my hips tipped up on their own, just a little, and the thumb stayed exactly where it was.

"She's dreaming something good," Eli said. He sounded wrecked. "Look at her mouth."

I was biting my lip.

I let go of it.

"Hold her legs," Clint said.

Two pairs of hands took my thighs and opened them wider, flat against the mattress.

Abel's hands.

Only one man in the world had palms that big, with calluses that caught on my skin.

Lyle's on the other side, lighter, with a ring on one thumb.

I was spread open in my father's house, in the room I had grown up in, with four men looking at me in the dark.

I had never been so wet in my life.

Clint's breath landed on me first.

Then his mouth.

He did not start gently.

He put his whole tongue flat against me and dragged it up, slow and hot, and my back left the bed before I could stop it.

"Easy," Abel muttered, and pressed my hip down.

"She likes it," Lyle said.

"Quiet."

Clint licked me again, and again, with a patience that made me want to scream.

He found my clit with the tip of his tongue and circled it, lazy and unhurried.

I bit down on the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood.

Eli's hand slid up under my T-shirt and pushed it over my breasts.

His thumb found my nipple.

He rolled it, soft, then not soft, and the sound that came out of me was one I had not planned.

All four of them went still.

My heart stopped for the length of a breath.

"Sleep noise," Lyle said, very low. "People make them."

"Yeah," Clint said against me. "They do."

Then he put his mouth back on me and sucked.

I came so hard my vision went white behind my eyelids.

I did not make a sound that time.

I held it in my throat and shook with it, my thighs trembling under two sets of hands, and Clint did not let up until I stopped.

He kissed the inside of my knee, once, almost tender.

Nobody spoke.

Someone pulled the sheet back up over my legs.

Someone smoothed the hair off my forehead.

Then the mattress rose as they stood, and the floor groaned under them, and they went out one at a time.

The door closed down to its hand's width.

I lay there with my whole body humming and my eyes still shut.

I was not sorry.

That was what scared me most.

Out in the hall their voices dropped, but the old house had never kept a secret from me.

"Same time tomorrow?" Lyle asked.

"She's not going anywhere," Abel said. His voice was steady and certain. "Not this time. I'll make sure of it."

I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.

Not this time.

What had they done the last time?
