Chapter 8: Sleepwalking

The next morning I decided to test them.

I came down to the kitchen in my robe, with my hair a mess, and sat across from Abel and frowned into my coffee.

"Weird thing," I said. "I think I sleepwalked last night."

Abel's fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

Eli looked at the ceiling.

Clint stared at his toast.

"Sleepwalked," Lyle said, very pleasantly. "Where to?"

"I don't know. I woke up with a bruise." I pulled the robe aside and showed the print on my thigh. "I must have hit the bedpost."

There was a short, terrible silence.

"That looks like a hand," Eli said.

"It looks like a bedpost," said Abel.

"Bedposts are very hand shaped," said Lyle. "It's a known thing."

I looked from face to face.

Not one of them cracked.

Not a twitch, not a flicker, only four men eating breakfast with steady, interested faces.

"You should lock your door," Clint said finally.

"I never lock it."

"Maybe try."

"Maybe," I said, "I'll leave it open."

Lyle choked on a mouthful of eggs.

The day went on.

I walked the north field with Abel, and he pointed out where the fence line had gone down and where Dad had planted the black walnut that was my fifth birthday present.

I rode the truck into town with Eli to pick up a bag of feed, and he talked the whole way, about a horse with a bad hoof, and about his mother, who had died when he was fourteen.
