Chapter 16: The Attic Door

Lena's POV

I heard Florian shout, "Dom, no," from the bottom of the stairs.

Then I heard a boot on the third step.

My phone lay on the nightstand. I reached over and pressed the red dot.

Then I stood up and faced the door.

The lock held. I had turned the key twice.

"Lena," Dominik said on the other side. His voice was thick and low.

"Go back down," I said.

"I paid it. I stood in front of the whole village. I counted every pill."

"That was the first payment," I said. "It isn't the last."

"Open the door."

"No."

The wood shook once, hard, and then the whole frame cracked.

He hit it with his shoulder again, and the old latch tore out of the jamb.

The door flew open.

Dominik stood there with his chest heaving. His shirt was undone, and his eyes were wild with drink.

I took a step back.

"You said anything," he said. "You put your hand on me last night and you said I could do anything."

"I said nothing of the kind. I asked you a question."

"You touched me. You wanted it."

"I didn't say yes."

He crossed the room in three steps.

He caught my wrist so hard that it hurt, and he pulled me against him.

His mouth came down on mine.

It tasted of schnapps.

His hand locked in my hair.

The other went under my hoodie and closed around my breast.

I could not breathe.

I had lain still in that bed for weeks to stay safe from this man.
