Chapter 25: Page Nine
Minho was warming the car at five in the morning when Missy came down her porch steps with a thermos.
"No," he said.
"I'm paying the price I named."
"I said I would tell you everything."
"And I said the minute you know. I'm not waiting for a text, honey. I want to hear it in the room."
He looked at her for a long, cold moment, and then he opened the passenger door.
The lawyer's office was above a chandlery in the harbor town, three hours down the coast.
She was a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain and a desk that held nothing but a legal pad.
Minho had found her through a friend of a friend, and he had called her at midnight and told her only that it was a contract.
She read the whole renewal in silence, with a pencil, while Missy sat with her hands in her lap and turned her rings.
Minho did not sit.
He stood at the window with his arms crossed and watched the boats.
"Well," the lawyer said, at last. "He's a very devoted young man and an extremely foolish one."
"Tell her page nine," Minho said.
"Page nine is a rider." The lawyer tapped it. "After the album meeting he agrees to no contact with the owner of the cabin, no visits to the town, and no statement about her except that she was a rental host."
Missy sat very still.
"For how long?"
"Seven years. The same as the rest."
"He never said that part."
"No," said Minho. "I'd have told you if I'd known."
