Chapter 31: Greedy

Jisung's hands would not stop shaking.

He sat on the wicker daybed on Missy's back porch, under the tin roof, with the rain coming down so hard the garden had disappeared.

His breath was thin and fast, and he was counting.

One. Two. Three.

He had counted through the whole of the cabin meeting without losing his place.

Now it was past midnight, the house was asleep, and the plan was real.

Thursday they would go live and tell the world.

His mother would see it.

His mother would see his face when he said what Missy was to him.

Four. Five.

He heard the screen door and knew the step.

"Hyung," he said, without turning. "Go to bed."

Minho sat down beside him and did not touch him.

"You're counting."

"I'm fine."

"You're not. Tell me what's loudest."

Jisung wiped his nose on his wrist.

"They're going to find out I'm a mess. All of it. The panic. Every time I froze at a fan meeting and you covered for me." His voice got smaller. "The whole world is going to know the babygirl of STARZ needs a cat on his chest to leave a doorway."

"They already know."

"They don't know why I came to her. Because I'm weak."

"Say that again."

"Because I'm weak. I walked in here and I cried on her."

He laughed, high and cracked.

"I'm a comfort-seeker. You and her could have anyone, and you're picking up my mess because you're kind."

"Jisung."

"It's greedy to want both of you."

The screen door opened a second time.

Missy stood there in her robe with her hair flat on one side, and she looked at him.

"I heard 'weak,'" she said. "Do I need to hit someone?"

"No."

"Good. I'm tired."

She sat down on his other side, so that he was in the middle of them, and she took his left hand.

Minho took the right.

Neither of them said anything for a while.

"Open your eyes," said Minho. "Count what you can see."

"The rain."

"More."

"The lamp. Your face. Her rings."

"Five things you can touch."
