Chapter 32: The Offer
The man in the grey suit was waiting outside the Wick when Missy unlocked the door at nine.
He carried a slim leather case and smiled at everything.
"Ms. Larkin," he said. "I represent the company. May I come in?"
"It's a café. You can buy a coffee."
He bought nothing.
He sat at the best table by the window, set the case on the chair beside him, and took out a folder and a single slip of paper.
By ten the Wick was full of the regulars.
Cats drifted between the tables, and the retired teacher in the cardigan had her usual place by the till.
Jisung brought a tray of cups to the window with his glasses crooked and his eyes huge, and Minho followed with the teapot.
Chan, Felix and Hyunjin came in from the back and stood in a line behind the counter.
The lawyer observed them all pleasantly.
"This is simpler than I feared," he said. "The company is prepared to be generous."
He slid the slip of paper across the table.
It was a check, made out to Missy Larkin, with more zeros than she had ever seen on anything.
"For your trouble," he said. "In return, a short statement. That the cabin was a rental, that you never met the members beyond the booking, and that you retract any impression to the contrary. Also an updated confidentiality agreement."
"And the men?"
"Each signs a waiver and flies home Monday."
"And if we don't?"
"The penalties apply as written. Fines. Dismissal, in some cases. And the footage."
The room had gone quiet.
"What footage?" said the teacher, not unkindly.
