Chapter 34: Rehearsal

"Rules," Felix said, and clapped his hands once.

It was Wednesday night, after closing, and the six of them stood in the Wick's back room among the flour sacks.

Felix had put on his working voice, the low one, and no one had noticed.

The yellow jacket from the lighthouse path had been gone by the time they reached the bottom.

All she had left was the cardboard sign, wedged in the fence, and now it leaned against the flour sacks where all six could see it.

WE SAW NOTHING. TELL IT YOUR WAY.

"Someone's watching us," Minho said. "Someone who's on our side, or wants us to think so."

"Then tomorrow we tell it our way," said Felix. "Rules first."

"Tomorrow we are on camera for an hour," he said. "Nobody touches anybody in a way a stranger could read. Practice starts now. First one to put a hand on Missy loses."

"Loses what?" said Jisung.

"Whatever I decide."

Missy leaned against the shelves with her arms folded, and felt her pulse in her throat.

"I'm just standing here," she said.

"You're standing there in that dress," said Chan, half under his breath.

"What dress?"

"The green one."

"It's a dress, honey."

"It has buttons."

She undid the top one, slowly, with her eyes on his.

Chan's breath went out of him.

Jisung lasted ninety seconds.

He walked across the room to read a label on a flour sack, and kissed her neck on the way back.

"Lost," said Felix.

"I was just passing."

"Ten minutes on your knees, then."

Jisung went down at once, with his glasses crooked and his eyes shining.

That broke it.

Hyunjin crossed the floor in two strides and kissed her hard, his long hands in her hair.

Minho followed, quietly, and stood behind her with his palms flat on her hips.

Chan did not move.

He stood with his fists pressed into his thighs, trembling.

"Hyung," said Felix, mildly. "You've lost already. Come here."

Chan came.
