Chapter 13: Say It Flat
"Yes," Ji said.
Lu's thumb stayed on his pulse.
"Yes, I knew," Ji said. "I knew for three years, and I let you walk onto that stage every week."
Lu let go of his wrist and picked up the notebook off the desk.
He threw it.
It hit Ji in the chest, not hard, and dropped to the floor between them with its pages fanned.
Ji didn't pick it up.
"Why?" Lu said. "Say it flat. Don't make it pretty."
"Because it wasn't enough."
"It's seventeen games. Dates, minutes, his voice on the comms."
"It's a rival captain's diary about another team's player."
Ji's voice stayed level, and his hands didn't.
"I took it to the league's tip line once, in your second season."
"And?"
"They laughed at the word VOD."
"You went to the tip line."
"Once. They logged it, and the next week Cheng sent you a car."
Lu remembered the car.
It had been red, and he had cried in it with happiness.
"I had no accounts," Ji said. "I had no chat logs. I had a stack of notes and the wrong team's jersey."
"You could have told me."
"You would have walked into his office and said it to his face."
"Yes."
"And he'd have smiled, and by Friday you'd have been the kid who accused his captain."
Ji looked at him.
"I wasn't going to hand him that."
"So you wrote it down."
"I wrote it down. And I waited for you to leave on your own, and then I'd have something to give you."
Lu stared at him.
"You waited three years for me to leave a team I loved."
"Yes."
"That's insane."
"Yes."
