Chapter 10: His Door
Kieran's POV
I found Margot's trail by the cigarette smoke.
It ran from my office window down the back of the ridge to the creek.
The woman who had left it was not hurrying.
I followed it on four legs, low and silent, and stopped in the pines above the water.
Two people stood on the Hollow Creek bank, in the open.
I could not cross to them without breaking my own word.
One was Margot, in her borrowed shawl, with the treaty copy in her hand.
The other was Anson.
The bruise on her cheek had smeared at the edges.
A smear of grey makeup lay on the white of her palm where she had wiped her face.
I filed that away and listened.
"The Council wants a hearing at the next moon," Margot said. "Hollow Creek's Alpha is summoned to answer for her. Father's name is on the paper."
"Damn it." Anson hit a tree. "Father said once the Council saw her, it was over."
"It isn't over. She trusts me."
"She trusts you?"
"I gave her Mother's brooch back, and she pinned it on her collar tonight." Margot laughed softly. "Fourteen years, and a bit of silver is all it took. She let me braid her hair, Anson."
"Did you get what Father wanted?"
She held up the paper. "The Stonepine copy. The clauses on the land transfer. Father will want the exact words they use for the blood line."
"And the lodge layout?"
"Kitchen, office, her cabin by the water. Nobody sleeps near her. Stroud sits outside her door at night, but he never goes in."
