Chapter 14: The Price of the Bridge
Anson took me by the collar and hauled me out of the room.
He did not say a word. He dragged me down three flights, past the kitchen and the hall, and out onto the front steps.
The whole pack stood on the lawn.
Two hundred people, with their faces turned to the bridge.
Kieran stood at the near end of it, on Hollow Creek ground, in his shirtsleeves with his hands open at his sides.
He was alone.
Behind him, across the water, I could see the Stonepine Beta holding a line of wolves back with one raised arm.
"That's the border," Anson said, loud, for the lawn. "He crossed it with no invitation. The law is clear."
"I know the law," Kieran said.
His eyes found me over Anson's shoulder, and something in his face let go.
"You said you'd come before I finished," I said.
"I didn't finish."
Anson shook me by the collar, once, to quiet me.
"Hollow Creek names its price," Anson said. "My father is the Alpha, and he's dying, so I speak for the seat. Three strikes of silver chain across your back. Here, in front of both packs."
A sound went through the crowd.
"And the north pasture," Anson said.
"Done," Kieran said.
"You haven't heard..."
"I don't need to. Done."
He walked to the middle of the lawn and pulled his shirt over his head. He knelt on the grass and put his hands on his knees.
I had seen the scars across his ribs. His back was clean.
Garson came down the steps with a chain looped over his arm. The links were as thick as my thumb and white at the edges.
