Chapter 11: Off With the Cuff

Morwenna's POV

The envoy was gone from the west wing before we got there.

Dorian's guards found his bed still warm and his window open, and a black ring on the sill.

"He heard," Dorian said. "Somebody in that hall has a very good ear."

"Wolves don't have ears like that," I said.

"No."

"Then he's a vampire."

"Or he's been paid by one." Dorian looked at the empty room. "He'll go over the east wall. It's the only one with no sentries, because the drop is sixty feet."

I took the cuff out of the pocket of my dressing gown.

It was the old leather one, with the buckle Dad had sewn on himself.

I looked at it for a second.

Then I dropped it into the fire.

It curled and spat, and the smell of burnt hide filled the room.

Dorian watched me do it and said nothing.

My wrist felt very light.

The black mark lay bare on my skin, and for the first time in my life I let it breathe.

It came up through me all at once.

I'd never felt anything like it.

The corridor suddenly had a hundred separate sounds in it, the guards' boots, the candle flames, a mouse in the wainscot, a heartbeat three rooms away.

I could smell the river.

I could smell the stone, and the wax, and the leather of a sentry's belt thirty yards off.

And I could smell a man running.

"East wall," I said. "He's on the wall now."

"How do you know?"

"I can hear his breath."

Dorian's head turned, and he looked at me hard.

"Can you catch him?"

"I don't know."

"Go and find out."

I went.

I had never run like that before.
