Chapter 4: The Healer at the Gate

Verity came to the Rookery gate at ten the next morning with a basket on her arm.

Emmett saw her first, from the kitchen window.

"She's got muffins," he said. "She actually brought muffins."

"Let her in," I said.

Mum put down her spoon. "Morwenna."

"I want to hear her say it to my face."

"I'm coming with you," Emmett said.

"You'll stand by the gate and look frightening."

"I always look frightening."

I went out alone and let her in through the side garden, where the roses were still wet.

Verity looked terrible.

Her eyes were red and her braid was crooked, and her hands shook on the basket handle.

"Morwen," she said. "Oh, Morwen. Thank the Goddess you're all right."

She put out her arms.

I let her hug me, and I hugged her back.

She smelled of lavender and fresh bread, the way she always did.

I held on one second longer than she wanted.

"I made the lemon ones," she said, and sniffed. "I didn't know what else to bring. I'm so sorry. Garrick was in such a state last night, and the elders got in his ear, and I never meant..."

"Eat one," I said.

She blinked at me.

"A muffin. Eat one now, in front of me."

"I'm not hungry."

"You made them for me."

She stared at the basket.

Then she took out a muffin, broke it in half, and ate a piece.

She chewed and swallowed with her eyes on my face.

I took the other half and put it in my pocket.

"That's all right," I said. "I wasn't going to eat it either."

Her face changed.

It wasn't a big change.
