Chapter 8: Blessing

Dorian let Garrick go, and Garrick slid down the pillar and stayed there on the floor.

Nobody helped him up.

Verity started toward him, then remembered and stopped with her hand out.

"Elder," Dorian said, in the same level voice. "Your Alpha is not well. Does Redmoor wish to continue?"

The Elder Mother stood.

Her face was grey, and she was thinking very fast.

"The Alpha cannot take another Luna," she said slowly. "And his mate will not release him."

"No," I said.

"Then Redmoor has no Luna. A pack with no Luna starves by winter." She turned to me, and I watched her decide to bargain. "You hold a bond you do not want, Morwenna Rooke. Name your price."

"I don't want a price."

"Everyone wants a price."

"All right," I said. "I'll give you something instead."

The hall waited.

"I don't hate Verity," I said. "I want you all to know that. She's been my friend. She loves Garrick, and he loves her. I wouldn't stand between two people who feel that way."

Verity went very still.

"So I give them my blessing," I said. "They'll live together in the Redmoor packhouse, in the Alpha's own room. They'll eat at the head table every night, side by side, so the pack can see them. They'll never be apart."

Garrick lifted his head.

"They can share a bed," I said. "I'm not stopping them. I'm only holding the bond. If the Goddess wants to say something about it, that's between her and him."

A long breath went down the Redmoor benches.

The Elder Mother looked at me for a very long moment.

Then, slowly, she smiled.

She thought I had given up.

She thought I was a frightened girl who wanted to be left alone with her baby, and had just found a way to say so without losing face.
