Chapter 19: Seven Fishes

I didn't answer him.

I didn't block the number either.

I wanted him to think I was scared for a month.

On Christmas Eve the River Forest house was lit up.

There were candles in every window and a wreath on the iron gate the size of a tractor tire.

The man at the gate looked at Killian's car, and then at Killian, and opened it without a word.

"He still knows your car," I said.

"He taught me to change a tire," Killian said. "He knows my car."

The dining room had both leaves in the table.

Rosario at the head. His sisters and their husbands. The cousins.

The old uncle with the cane, who saw me come in and lifted his glass an inch.

And on Rosario's right, across from each other, the two families.

Tiziano on one side, tanned from Miami, in a black velvet jacket.

On his right hand was a heavy gold signet ring with the Caravello crest.

It had been Rosario's father's. Rosario put it on him at twenty-one, in front of all of them.

Everybody at that table knew what it meant.

Across from him sat Scalise and his wife, and between them, Cristina.

She was in plain black. No ring light. No phone on the table.

She looked at me once when I came in, and then she looked at her plate.

Rosario had set two places for us at the far end, below the cousins.
